News > Five Outdoor Experiences in Kirkby-in-Furness
If you love the outdoors, Kirkby-in-Furness is the perfect place to call home. This peaceful town in Cumbria is surrounded by walking routes, nature reserves and scenic spots, with something new to explore each weekend.
Our Burlington Rise development puts you close to some of the region's best-loved beauty spots, while offering modern, energy-efficient homes that are easy to maintain. Here are five fantastic outdoor activities to try near Kirkby-in-Furness.
1) Spend a day at Coniston Water
Coniston Water is just a short drive from Kirkby-in-Furness and is one of the most popular places to visit in the South Lakes. Here you can try paddleboarding or kayaking, hire a small boat, or take a relaxing lake cruise. Surrounded by rolling hills, it’s a great place for a picnic or an afternoon walk along the shoreline.
It's also a brilliant spot for photographers as it has views across the water to the nearby Old Man of Coniston, a popular fell walk for more experienced hikers.
2) Walk up Black Combe
Black Combe is one of the highest peaks in the Furness area and is less than half an hour by car from Burlington Rise. It’s a favourite route for walkers because of the views from the top, which stretch across the Irish Sea and towards the Lake District fells on a clear day.
There are a few different walking routes to the summit, making it ideal for both steady walkers and more seasoned hikers. You also don’t need to be an expert to enjoy this walk, and it’s usually much quieter than some of the better-known Lake District climbs.
3) Explore Hodbarrow Nature Reserve
For a peaceful morning outdoors, Hodbarrow Nature Reserve is a great option. Once an iron ore mine, this nature reserve is now a calm and quiet wildlife haven with walking trails, open water and views across the Duddon Estuary.
The area is well-known for birdwatching, with species including terns, redshanks and oystercatchers. It’s also a brilliant spot to bring binoculars, take photos or just enjoy the fresh air and wildlife.
4) Discover the Duddon Estuary
Just a short journey from Kirkby-in-Furness, the Duddon Estuary is one of the area's most peaceful places to walk and explore. This coastal landscape has salt marshes, mudflats and sandbanks, making it the perfect place for birdwatching and taking pictures.
If you’re looking for quiet places to explore with stunning views, this is a lovely spot to visit throughout the year.
5) Walk part of The Cumbria Coastal Way
The Cumbria Coastal Way is a long-distance footpath that runs through Kirkby-in-Furness. It’s a brilliant walking route with coastal views, passing through small villages, nature areas and open countryside.
You can take on a short section of the route for a relaxing walk, or plan a day out and explore further along the coast. The footpath is clearly marked and gives you a chance to discover some of the lesser-known areas of the Furness Peninsula.
